Fan throated lizard is a very common species found across India, SriLanka and few parts in Pakistan.
It was in the month of August, during the monsoon season I have encountered them within a dump ground near Pune in Western Ghats. This is the first time for me so see them in a breeding plumage by displaying the color of dewlap. Initially it takes time for him to get comfortable with us, so we waited there patiently without much noise and movement. But after that he has given a very warm welcome to us.
Their characteristics, behavior, habitat can easily found in the internet and searching in the Google. I am jotting few small facts about them.
1. Their conservation status is “least concern” and they are found in India, Srilanka and in few parts of Pakistan.
2. They have an expandable flap of skin under their throat, which is know as a dewlap. It is displayed during courtship display or communication to other individuals or to scare enemies.
3. A adult male is having approximately 8 inch length out of which tail takes 3 to 5 inch.
4. It is primarily a ground-dwelling species, but is sometimes found on trees.
